Modeling the power flow in normal conductor-insulator-superconductor junctions

چکیده
Normal conductor-insulator-superconductor ~NIS! junctions promise to be interesting for x-ray and phonon sensing applications, in particular due to the expected self-cooling of the N electrode by the tunneling current. Such cooling would enable the operation of the active element of the sensor below the cryostat temperature and at a correspondingly higher sensitivity. It would also allow the use of NIS junctions as microcoolers. At present, this cooling has not been realized in large area junctions ~suitable for a number of detector applications!. In this article, we discuss a detailed modeling of the heat flow in such junctions; we show how the heat flow into the normal electrode by quasiparticle back-tunneling and phonon absorption from quasiparticle pair recombination can overcompensate the cooling power. This provides a microscopic explanation of the self-heating effects we observe in our large area NIS junctions. The model suggests a number of possible solutions. © 1998 American Institute of Physics. @S0021-8979~98!00406-X#

Perspectives of Overdamped Josephson Junctions in Voltage Standard Applications
We discuss the main characteristics that must be satisfied by Josephson junctions for metrological applications and, specifically, in the development of voltage standards of new generation. Data reported in the literature for the most established technologies, like SNS (Superconductor-Normal conductor-Superconductor), SINIS (SuperconductorInsulator-Normal conductor-Insulator-Superconductor) and...
متن کاملDevelopment of Josephson junction series arrays for synthesis of AC voltages and arbitrary waveforms
Josephson junctions operated by short pulses make the synthesis of AC and arbitrary waveforms possible. Series arrays of intrinsically shunted SINIS and SNS Josephson junctions were developed and characterized for applications in this Josephson arbitrary waveform synthesizer (S: Superconductor, I: Insulator, N: Normal conductor). First measurements under pulse irradiation are presented.

We suggest and demonstrate in experiment that two normal metal /insulator/ superconductor (NIS) tunnel junctions combined in series to form a symmetric SINIS structure can operate as an efficient Peltier refrigerator. Specifically, it is shown that the SINIS structure with normal-state junction resistances 1.0 and 1.1 kΩ is capable of reaching a temperature of about 100 mK starting from 300 mK....
متن کاملHeat transport and electron cooling in ballistic normal-metal/spin-filter/superconductor junctions
We investigate electron cooling based on a clean normal-metal/spin-filter/superconductor junction. Due to the suppression of the Andreev reflection by the spin-filter effect, the cooling power of the system is found to be extremely higher than that for conventional normal-metal/nonmagnetic-insulator/superconductor coolers. Therefore we can extract large amount of heat from normal metals. Our re...
متن کاملMeissner effect in diffusive normalmetal / d-wave superconductor junctions
The Meissner effect in diffusive normal metal / insulator / d-wave superconductor junctions is studied theoretically in the framework of the Usadel equation under the generalized boundary condition. The effect of midgap Andreev resonant states (MARS) formed at the interface of d-wave superconductor is taken into account. It is shown that the formation of MARS suppresses the susceptibility of th...
